New initiative for collaboration between universities in Canada and the Nordic Arctic
Can geopolitical tensions in the Arctic create new opportunities for research, higher education and innovation?
This was a central question at the Canada–Arctic Six: Northern Innovation Initiative workshop and seminar, held at Nord University in Bodø on 13–14 October 2026.
Researchers and university leaders from Canada, Norway, Sweden and Finland explored new opportunities for long-term collaboration in:
◾Security, defence and preparedness
◾Renewable energy and energy security
◾Critical minerals and responsible resource development
◾Indigenous knowledge and perspectives
◾Environmental challenges and local communities
The forthcoming Horizon Europe 2028–2034 programme—with €175 billion earmarked for research and innovation—could provide important opportunities, including the call on governance and sustainable development in a future ice-free Arctic.
The Arctic Six and Canadian universities have complementary strengths, extensive networks and a shared commitment to Arctic research. This might result in several joint initiatives in the years to come.
